When the 111-megawatt Cross Winds® Energy Park -- owned by Consumers Energy -- began operating in 2014, the wind energy facility reinforced the image of the region known as “MI Green Thumb.” The Thumb is already home to Michigan Wind I and II, owned by Exelon, which produce electricity for Consumers Energy, as well as a number of other wind farms owned by other parties.
The Cross Winds® Energy Park project brings employment, economic and tax benefits to the area, Consumers Energy is committed to being a good neighbor in Tuscola County by ensuring Cross Winds® was designed and built in compliance with wind zoning ordinances created to protect the health, safety, and welfare of nearby residents.
Future phases of Cross Winds are being planned by Consumers Energy beginning in 2017 and continuing through 2020. 44 megawatts will be added by the end of 2017 with the possibility of an additional 76 megawatts added by the end of 2020.
Akron and Columbia Township planning commissions reviewed and approved the special use permits and site plans where Cross Winds is located.
